2014 RP Summer Institute

August 5-7, 2014  |  Kellogg West  |  Pomona, CA

The 2014 RP Summer Institute is a multi-day training featuring content for all researchers and planners in the California community college system (new and seasoned) who are interested in advancing evidence-based strategies in support of sustained improvement at their colleges.

The application process for the 2014 Summer Institute has now closed and paricipants will be notified in early July. Held Tuesday August 5th through Thursday August 7th, this multi-day training features content for all researchers and planners in the California community college system (new and seasoned) who are interested in advancing evidence-based strategies in support of sustained improvement at their colleges.

Note that this year’s Institute is employing a new design intended to provide deeper, more focused training in skills and knowledge tailored to have immediate application at each applicant’s home institution. Furthermore, the 2014 RP Summer Institute will be the first event of a year-long professional development program that will incorporate webinars and regional training programs to extend and deepen the curriculum presented at the Institute.

Applicants are encouraged to apply as teams to the Institute. Those wishing to apply as individuals will be assigned to teams in advance of the August 5th start date. Enrollment will be limited to no more than 50 participants and we anticipate strong demand so we encourage everyone to apply early.

Curriculum

The institute curriculum is structured around four learning sessions that will expose participants to current thinking and best practices in specific areas identified as topics of interest in the recent RP professional development survey, including:

  • Enrollment management and planning

  • Effective presentation of data

  • Leading group discussions about data

  • Moving from data to action and engaging resistance

Case Method

Each team will be asked to select one of several available scenarios from which they will develop a case study. The scenarios simulate real situations currently facing community colleges and participants will be using their own institutional data on their own institutions to form the foundation for their case study. The format of each session will provide opportunities for each team to ask questions and test ideas to further the development of their case study. On the final day of the institute, each team will present their case study and receive feedback to support effective sharing of their findings back at their home institutions.

Ongoing Support

To further assist participants with dissemination of their case study at their colleges, The RP Group will provide ongoing support during the 2014-15 year through webinars and face-to-face training, including opportunities through its nine regional research groups. Regional meeting agendas will incorporate opportunity for Institute participants to report out on their experiences. Speakers with expertise in relevant areas will be invited to advance the ideas and thinking of the work of institute participants.

Cost

The cost per participant is $550 for those attending from RP member institutions and $600 for those attending from non-member institutions. This fee includes lodging for the nights of August 5th and 6th and all meals during the institute.
