RP Group Awards for Excellence and Distinction 1998

Each year the RP Group recognizes outstanding research and planning efforts.
The following awards were presented at the 37th Annual RP Group Conference.

Institutional Research

Award for Excellence

Los Rios Community College District
The 1998 Environmental Scan Report Card

Project Summary: The first of an annual series of reports that outline internal performance of institutional effectiveness.  It provides five-year trends of student performance measures related to access, academic achievement, satisfaction and employment of students who attend Los Rios CCD colleges -- American River College, Cosumnes River College and Sacramento City College.  Available in both hard copy and on the web site, the Report Card is complimented by the annual Environmental Scan of Greater Sacramento ad the Key Issues for Planning Report, which summarizes the findings of both the internal and external reviews.

James E. Barr and Richard A. Rasor
American River College
Student Services Group Performance

Project Summary: This research reports important findings at American River College showing that students affiliated with specific student service groups -- EOP&S, DSP&S, Athletes, MESA, LD, and PACE outperform non-student service affiliated groups.  Barr and Rasor's work suggests that academic preparedness upon entry into college and more traditional remediation efforts should not be the only focus for successful student performance.

Modesto Junior College
Student Success Plan

Project Summary: This comprehensive planning document outlines goals, objectives and activities to improve student success at Modesto Junior College.  It can be used as a model for other colleges as they integrate research and Partnership for Excellence goals into the planning process, prioritize activities and allocate funds.

Pasadena City College
Observations 1997-98 - A Compendium of Information for and about Pasadena City College

Project Summary: This comprehensive fact book was designed to answer many questions frequently asked about the College's programs an services, staff, classes, students and student outcomes and how they change over time, useful for college planning.  Contents provide information about  the Pasadena City College Service Area, student enrollment trends, characteristics of new students, non credit students, special populations, student outcomes, instructional programs and facts about faculty, staff and administration.

Cabrillo College
Cabrillo College's Office of Institutional Research Web Site

Project Summary: Cabrillo College's web site provides up-to-date external and internal data and planning information  readily accessible to its constituents.  Comprehensive data on students, faculty, staff, facilities are available.  Comprehensive job outlook information is provided for occupational education programs, as well as the results of follow-up surveys administered to students leaving Cabrillo College who are now employed.

The Student Right-to-Know Reporting Project Web Site

Project Summary: The Student Right-to-Know (SRTK) Web Site provides a comprehensive account of the entire SRTK project including background information, reporting forms and formats, data definitions, task force information, software support, secure data downloads of college data and college SRTK rates.  This initiative is an exemplary example of state support to community colleges to meet federal IPEDS for Student-Right-to-Know reporting.  It was the first statewide efforts in the nation.

Project Summary: The RP Group Web Site, developed and managed by staff at San Jose/Evergreen Community College District under the leadership of Jon Kangas, RP Group President, is an important source of information for research and planning professionals in California, specifically and to professionals throughout the U.S.  It provides valuable tips and tools, newsletters, RP Group publications, job announcements and links to other web sites of interest to research and planning professionals.
