What Is the Leading from the Middle Program?

Leading from the Middle (LFM) is The RP Group’s long-standing leadership development program for California community colleges. Through learning, coaching, and community, LFM helps colleges grow and sustain the middle leaders who have the insight and influence to drive meaningful equity-centered change.

At its core, LFM develops people. We help middle leaders discover and deepen their leadership identity, build the relationships that make collective work possible, and develop the systems-thinking necessary to transform institutions with intention and care.

Why Middle Leadership Matters

California community colleges cannot advance equity or improve student success without middle leaders who can move change forward. Their development cannot be incidental; colleges must intentionally invest in structured support that provides the time, tools, and community needed to lead transformative, student-centered change.

LFM provides that intentional support. We help middle leaders think systemically, act collaboratively, and lead with courage. Through shared learning and practice, leaders clarify their purpose, build effective coalitions, navigate complex challenges, and design equitable change that improves outcomes for students.

How LFM Develops Leadership

LFM develops leadership through connected experiences that build capacity, community, and impact. The 15-month Academy serves as the foundation of the program, strengthening cross-functional teams to lead equity-centered change. The Alumni Network extends connection and continued growth beyond the cohort year, while the Leadership Impact Series creates space to share learning and elevate campus work across the system.
