Mitra Sapienza is committed to celebrating faculty obligation in dismantling institutional barriers that perpetuate disparity of opportunity among community college students. She has worked in higher education since 2000, as a classified staff member managing a community college writing center, as a part-time faculty member at College of San Mateo and San Francisco State University, and since 2007 as a tenured faculty at City College of San Francisco.

Mitra has taught the range of pre-transfer, transfer and second-year English composition and literature courses. She has coordinated faculty-led, equity-focused, and race-conscious professional development at the department, college, and state level, and has served as local Academic Senate President. Currently, Mitra serves as Umoja English faculty and the district Student Equity coordinator at City College of San Francisco and At-Large Representative for the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) Board of Directors. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and a Master of Arts in literature and a certificate in teaching composition, both from San Francisco State University.
